INTRODUCTION TO CONTEXTUAL STUDIES

What is contextual studies? Contextual studies is mainly about art movements. From what I learned, art movement is about the hidden meaning behind every actions or artworks. Basically, art movement is categorized in 5 differences which are expressionism, surrealism, modernism, postmodernism, dadaism, and kitsch.

"Art movement is a tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a restricted period of time, or, at least, with the heyday of the movement defined within a number of years." - Google search.

For a quick and simple example: movies nowadays contain art movement(s) and that is what make them become an interesting and meaningful movie. Art movement is something similar to main idea. The main idea that you want to deliver to your audiences may be verbal or non-verbal.

Quotations in movies are very important to every movies, but, in the same time, actor's actions and emotions might give a different meaning to the audiences. Conclusively, art movement comes in verbal and non-verbal. It is the idea and the central core of the movie.

Expressionism is a style of painting, music, or drama in which the artist or writer seeks to express the inner world of emotion rather than external reality.

Surrealism is a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.

Modernism is a style or movement in the arts that aims to depart significantly from classical and traditional forms.

Postmodernism describes a broad movement that developed in the mid- to late 20th century across philosophy, the arts, architecture and criticism which marked a departure from modernism.

Dadaism was a noisy alarm that woke modern art from its slumber, then this drawing reveals how the alarm was sounded.

Kitsch also called cheesiness or tackiness, is art or other objects that appeal to popular or uncultivated taste because they are garish or overly sentimental, which means that these objects are considered by other people to be ugly, without style, false, or in poor taste but enjoyed or appreciated by still other people in an ironic or knowing way or because it is funny.
